This section was built by General Qi Jiguang, a famous
military commander in the Ming Dynasty.
It is this section
of the Great Wall that
played an important role to protecting The First Pass Under
Heaven, which is the northern part of Shanhaiguan from the enemy.
In 1381 AD, the Ming government started
the project. According to the historical data, this section
of the Great Wall was built on the base of the Wall in Northern
Qi Dynasty (550 - 577 AD). In 1571 AD, General Qi rebuilt it
for recognition purposes. In the Ming Dynasty, many battles
were fought along this section frequently. Some important communications
centers such as the Pass of Ping Ding and the Pass of Chen Zi
were just beside the wall.
The architectural forms of the Great Wall are various.
Some the relief carvings on the arched gateways are scanty in
China, because this is the vivid embodiment of the culture from
south China, which General Qi brought in from Fujian Province.
As most of the villagers along the Great Wall are the descendants
of the soldiers who were on guard in the Ming Dynasty, this
section of Great Wall has been protecting perfectly. Some of
the small house built for sheltering patrol soldiers on the
ramparts are still in their integrity.
