Dragon
Head
Five kilometers south of the city
of Shangaiguan, the Old Dragon Head is in the very eastern end
of the Great Wall, where it plunges into the sea. It was built
in the Ming Dynasty by General Xu Da. The martial constructions
lasted from the beginning to the end of Ming Dynasty. In the
Qin Dynasty, invaders destroyed the Old Dragon Head for military
purpose. In 1985, the government took effective measures to
repair the Old Dragon Head. Eight years later, the whole military
construction system reappeared. Old Dragon Head was not only
a vital fortress, but also
an excellent place for scholars and poets to brew artistic produce.
Some famous emperors such as Kang Xi, Yong Zheng and Qian Long
in the Qin Dynasty wrote a lot of poems that won universal praise
by later generations. And this became a must when the emperors
were on the way to Shengjing to sacrifice their ancestors.
