  Introduction

About 3km to the north of Shan haiguan lies JiaoShan. The altitude of its highest peak, Da Ping Ding, is 519 meters.
The mountain got its name because of a big stone, which is like the horn of the dragon. Horn is called ¡°jiao¡± in Chinese, and mountain is ¡°shan¡±. The two characters put together¡ªJiaoshan. Jiaoshan is the first mountain peak of the Great Wall from Shanhaiguan. Therefore people also call it ¡°the first mountain of the Great Wall¡±.

  Particular characteristics

As Jiaoshan is the first mountain of the Great Wall, it got a high position. Most of its peaks are steep, and the craggy mountain became the natural bulwark of Shanhaiguan in history.
The main attraction at Jiaoshan is the Great Wall. Built in the 1st year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, Jiaoshan Wall is 1536m long from the Hanmen Pass form the foot to the peak Da Ping Ding. The height and the width of the Great Wall here are largely decided by the tendency of the mountain.
Most parts of the Great Wall at Jiaoshan were built with mountain stone, and there were also some bricks sections. On the way to Liu Pin Ding, people can enjoy the amazing architecture¡ªa section of the Great wall that only 40cm wide. In fact, this section of the Wall is a kind of parapet that was composed of two bricks. Just beside the parapet, there is a path. To certain extent, the parapet was used for protecting people from falling in ancient time. The Three Passes are located 8 miles to the northeast of Shanhaiguan. In fact, this section of the Great Wall has three important passes that were used for repelling the enemy in ancient times. So it got the name Three Passes. As the mountains here are terribly steep and the valley are very low, the Three Passes are amazing in the construction of the Great Wall. This section of the Wall was made of bricks with a total length of 468m. The Wall is 4.7 meters high and 2 meters wide, and in the inner parts, lime slurry was used as the agglutination. It looks like a huge dragon standing upside down. So this section is famous for the peculiar upside down phenomenon. And you are lucky enough to enjoy the particular sight in a rainy day. You would see marvelous waterfalls falling down the hill that could make the Wall grander than ever before. In the peak season it attracts thousands of tourists from both home and abroad.
